COURSE DESCRIPTION
In the first semester, we'll read classic works of poetry and creative nonfiction. In the second semester, we'll read short stories. Students will memorize and recite one poem. They will also write, revise, and polish one poem, one essay, and one short story. This course will focus on quality over quantity, so working on the same pieces of writing over longer periods of time, rather than generating new work every week.

Hi, I'm Ms. Finnigan
I received my B.A. in English from Boston College and my M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Montana, where I won the Merriam-Frontier Award for distinguished achievement in writing. I've been teaching writing online in one form or another since 2008. I believe creative writing is the goal and summit of an education in the language arts, that it is for everyone, and that the end of high school is the perfect time to study the craft of writing, to be inspired by the masters, and to dedicate oneself to a serious creative endeavor!
Alexander Pope wrote "Ode on Solitude," one of his most anthologized poems, when he was only 12 years old.
Langston Hughes wrote "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" when he was only 17.
This is a photo taken when he was in high school.
